Blacksburg, Virginia – Hazardous travel conditions are expected to persist across portions of north central and northwest North Carolina through Monday morning as lingering snow and refreezing moisture impact roads, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. EST Monday for Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties. Cities included in the advisory include Dobson, Danbury, Eden, Yanceyville, Wilkesboro, and Yadkinville.

Forecasters say snow accumulations from earlier precipitation events will remain on the ground through Sunday evening. As temperatures drop overnight, any remaining moisture or melting snow on road surfaces is expected to refreeze, leading to icy conditions on roads, bridges, and overpasses.

According to the weather service, the refreeze will be most noticeable during the overnight hours and early Monday morning, increasing the risk of slick travel during the morning commute. Primary and secondary roads, along with elevated surfaces that cool more quickly, may become hazardous even where snow has already been cleared.

Travel impacts are expected along major corridors including US-52, US-421, NC-8, and connecting rural routes across the advisory area. Officials caution that conditions may appear improved during the afternoon but deteriorate again after sunset as temperatures fall below freezing.

The hazardous conditions could impact commuters, school transportation, and early-morning workers on Monday. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for icy patches, especially in shaded areas and on bridges.

Drivers can check the latest road conditions by calling 5-1-1 or visiting the North Carolina Department of Transportation website before traveling. The Winter Weather Advisory is scheduled to expire at 10 a.m. Monday as temperatures gradually rise and road conditions improve.
