Morehead City, NC – A winter storm warning remains in effect for Carteret County and surrounding areas through 7 a.m. today, bringing hazardous road conditions and additional snowfall. Officials warn residents to avoid unnecessary travel as icy roads and gusty winds up to 35 mph create dangerous driving conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City, snowfall accumulation has reached 5 inches in some areas, with an additional 2-4 inches expected before the storm tapers off. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous. The NWS advises drivers to use extreme caution and keep flashlights, food, and water in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable.
Temperatures will remain bitterly cold today, with wind chills as low as 8°F across eastern North Carolina. A cold weather advisory also remains in effect until 10 a.m., cautioning against frostbite or hypothermia risks. Residents are urged to dress in layers, wear insulated gloves, and limit time outdoors.
Looking ahead, the forecast shows mostly sunny skies Wednesday afternoon, with highs around 33°F. However, Thursday brings a slight chance of freezing rain, with temperatures climbing to 39°F. Clearer weather is expected Friday and Saturday, with highs reaching the low 40s, offering a brief reprieve from winter conditions.
