Boone, NC – A winter storm warning remains in effect for northwestern North Carolina, bringing significant icing and hazardous travel conditions through 7 a.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, additional ice accumulations between two-tenths and three-tenths of an inch are expected across Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga counties. The storm is also affecting portions of southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia.
Officials warn that travel may become treacherous, especially during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible and to carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, if venturing out.
Power outages are also a concern, as ice buildup on trees and power lines increases the risk of outages in affected areas. Residents should prepare for potential disruptions by charging devices and having backup heating sources available.
For real-time road conditions, travelers can call 511 or check state transportation websites. Authorities emphasize extreme caution on icy roads and encourage motorists to allow extra time for travel while avoiding sudden stops or acceleration.
This winter storm follows a pattern of recent severe weather in the region, with freezing temperatures and icy conditions persisting into Thursday morning.
