Morehead City, North Carolina – Snow that fell across eastern North Carolina this weekend is creating ongoing travel concerns, even as the worst of the storm has ended. Sunshine this afternoon may offer brief melting, but temperatures staying below freezing are expected to refreeze moisture on roads tonight, increasing the risk of icy conditions into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday for much of eastern North Carolina. The earlier Winter Storm Warning has been cancelled, but hazardous travel conditions persist across inland and coastal communities from the Outer Banks to the Coastal Plain.

Snow remains on roads in areas including Greenville, Washington, New Bern, Jacksonville, Kinston, Morehead City, Beaufort, and along the Outer Banks from Kitty Hawk to Hatteras and Ocracoke. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads are especially vulnerable to icing overnight as temperatures fall back below freezing.

Drivers heading out early Monday should plan for slick spots and slower travel, particularly in shaded areas and near waterways where refreezing occurs faster. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks, steps, and driveways.

The advisory remains in effect through mid-morning Monday, when temperatures are expected to rise enough to improve conditions. Officials urge residents to monitor road conditions through 5-1-1 and allow extra time for the morning commute as cleanup continues.
