Newport, North Carolina – North Carolina’s coastal communities will feel the worst of this week’s summer heat Tuesday as an Extreme Heat Watch stays in effect until 8 p.m. across Beaufort County and much of eastern North Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, heat index values could climb as high as 111°F between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, prompting urgent warnings for residents to stay hydrated and limit time outdoors. A Heat Advisory remains active through 10 a.m. Tuesday, before transitioning into the more serious Extreme Heat Watch.
High temperatures near 96°F and stifling humidity will elevate heat risks across Newport, Havelock, and surrounding communities. Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak hours and check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises frequent shade breaks and water for outdoor workers.
Car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in minutes. Never leave children or pets in vehicles. Light clothing, hydration, and avoiding strenuous activities are critical to prevent heat-related illness.
A slight chance of storms may develop Wednesday afternoon, offering temporary relief, but sunshine and upper 80s return late week.
