Raleigh, N.C. – Central North Carolina is bracing for its most intense heat wave of the year, with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and heat index values nearing 110° from Wednesday through at least next Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the most dangerous conditions are expected Wednesday and Thursday, with another spike coming Sunday and continuing into the middle of next week. High temperatures across the region—including Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville—will hover between 95° and 100°, while humidity will push “feels like” temperatures into extreme danger levels.

The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of North Carolina under a High Risk of extreme heat starting this weekend, part of a broader heat dome gripping the eastern U.S. Light winds and minimal overnight cooling will exacerbate the risk of heat exhaustion and stroke, especially during outdoor activity.

Local emergency officials urge residents to limit strenuous activity between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors without access to air conditioning. Schools and outdoor camps may also adjust schedules or cancel activities due to heat risk.

Extreme heat advisories remain likely into next week. More warnings may be issued as temperatures peak again Sunday.
