Newport, NC – Dangerous fire weather is expected across the eastern North Carolina Coastal Plain today as gusty winds, very low humidity, and ongoing drought conditions combine to create an environment favorable for rapid fire spread. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday for Martin, Pitt, and Greene counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a cold front will move across the region this afternoon, bringing a sudden wind shift and drier air. Northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, will develop shortly before midday.
Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 25%, while temperatures climb into the mid-70s, further drying out grasses, brush, and other fuels already stressed by regional drought.
According to the NWS, these conditions could cause any fire that starts to catch and spread quickly, with the potential for rapid, unpredictable fire growth. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and even small sparks—from equipment, vehicles, or tools—may ignite flames.
The peak risk window is expected between early afternoon and sunset, when winds and temperatures will be strongest and humidity lowest.
Residents, farmers, and outdoor workers in Greenville, Bethel, Williamston, Snow Hill, and surrounding communities are urged to avoid any activities that could produce sparks and to secure equipment that may drag or scrape.
