Raleigh, North Carolina – A calm and seasonably mild Monday is unfolding across central North Carolina as morning clouds and pockets of fog gradually clear, setting the stage for a brighter and warmer afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, low clouds and patchy fog early this morning are most noticeable across the western Piedmont, where visibility may briefly be reduced around sunrise. Conditions improve steadily through the late morning as clouds thin and break, allowing for partly cloudy skies by midday.
Afternoon temperatures will climb into the low 50s across the northwestern Piedmont, including areas like Winston-Salem and Roxboro, while southeastern sections of the state warm into the low 60s near Fayetteville, Goldsboro, and the Sandhills. Raleigh, Durham, and the Triangle region are expected to top out in the mid to upper 50s.
Any lingering fog should dissipate quickly, but drivers are advised to remain cautious on rural roads early this morning, especially in low-lying areas. No precipitation is expected, and travel conditions improve markedly by late morning.
Overnight lows will dip into the upper 30s to low 40s, keeping conditions relatively mild for early January. Forecasters say the quiet pattern continues into Tuesday with continued mild temperatures and increasing clouds ahead of the next weather system later in the week.
