Raleigh, NC – North Carolina is facing a rare August cooldown, with highs across the state dipping as much as 18 degrees below normal Tuesday, particularly across the Triad and western Piedmont. Cooler temperatures will be accompanied by periods of rain, and isolated storms could roll through after midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, Tuesday’s highs will range between 70 to 83 degrees, with the Triad region—Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point—likely seeing the lowest temperatures. Rain is expected to continue through tonight, with the heaviest activity targeting the Piedmont and Triad counties. Thunderstorms may develop after midnight, potentially producing localized downpours.

Drivers should be alert on major corridors like I-40 and I-85, especially near Greensboro and Burlington, where reduced visibility and ponding on roads are possible late tonight. Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.

Temperatures are expected to gradually return to seasonal norms by midweek, but scattered showers could linger into Wednesday morning.
