Newport, NC – North Carolina continues to face elevated fire weather concerns as a stretch of dry, sunny days locks in over the eastern counties, including Newport. With temperatures climbing into the low 70s and wind gusts expected up to 24 mph Friday, officials are urging caution across Craven and Carteret Counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, dry conditions will persist through at least Tuesday. The heightened fire risk spans Pamlico, Southern Craven, West and East Carteret, and surrounding coastal areas. Winds from the southwest Friday afternoon could further dry vegetation, increasing ignition potential. No rain is forecast until Monday, and even then, only a 30% chance of light showers is expected.

Friday will bring mostly sunny skies with a high of 72°F. Winds will shift southwest at 5 to 15 mph, with gusts near 24 mph. Friday night remains mild, dropping to 58°F under partly cloudy skies. Saturday stays partly sunny with a high of 73°F, followed by a mostly cloudy night.

Sunday’s forecast is mostly cloudy, continuing the dry trend with highs again in the low 70s. Rain chances return Monday, but with limited relief from the current drought-like stretch.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and to monitor any local fire restrictions. Drivers along U.S. Route 70 and coastal roadways should remain vigilant for reduced visibility if brush fires occur.
