Monroe, NC – Dangerous heat continues across the Charlotte metro’s southeastern communities Saturday, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect until 8 p.m. EDT for Union County, North Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, heat index values are expected to climb as high as 107 degrees during the afternoon and early evening. The advisory includes the communities of Monroe, Indian Trail, Weddington and Trinity.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity will create conditions that significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions and those spending extended periods outdoors.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day, staying in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the afternoon. Those who must work outside should take frequent breaks in shaded or cool locations and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
The National Weather Service also emphasizes that children and pets should never be left unattended inside vehicles, even for a short time. Interior vehicle temperatures can rise to life-threatening levels within minutes.
Residents are encouraged to check on family members, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion should move to a cool location, hydrate and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. Heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.
The Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, and residents should continue practicing heat safety until temperatures begin to cool later this evening.
