New Bern, N.C. – Eastern North Carolina heads into Labor Day’s close with below-normal temperatures early this week before summer heat returns, but beachgoers face a more immediate concern: dangerous rip currents north of Cape Hatteras.
According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a High Rip Current Risk is in effect today for Outer Banks beaches, making swimming hazardous. Lifeguards urge visitors to stay out of the water where red flags are posted.
Inland, a stretch of sunny, comfortable weather dominates through Wednesday, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and lows dipping into the 60s. New Bern, Greenville, and Jacksonville will see the clearest skies through midweek before temperatures steadily climb toward the upper 80s by Friday.
The warming trend brings a shift in the pattern late week, when isolated showers and storms become possible. Commuters should watch for brief downpours Thursday and Friday, especially during the afternoon and evening drive.
Beach conditions remain the main hazard today, and coastal officials stress avoiding non-guarded swimming areas. Conditions will be reassessed daily, but the risk for rip currents may linger through midweek.
