Wilmington, N.C. – Coastal neighborhoods in New Hanover County face a minor flooding threat this weekend as persistent onshore winds push water inland during the evening high tides. The National Weather Service in Wilmington warns that minor coastal flooding is possible as early as Friday evening and may persist each night through at least Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service Wilmington office, the risk is tied to repeated high tide cycles, with the greatest impacts expected along low-lying roads, beach access points, and near the Intracoastal Waterway. Areas historically prone to saltwater flooding may see water covering pavement during peak tides.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation urges drivers to avoid driving through saltwater on roadways, which can damage vehicles and reduce braking ability. Coastal residents are encouraged to move parked cars to higher ground and monitor tidal updates from local officials.
While sunny skies will dominate the weekend, forecasters note winds from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph will help funnel water toward the shoreline. This could delay drainage along secondary roads near Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach, and Surf City. Power and school operations are not expected to be disrupted, but beach events and evening activities could face interruptions.
Residents should prepare for several evenings of nuisance flooding by planning travel outside of high tide windows. Officials also recommend securing outdoor belongings from saltwater spray and keeping emergency supplies on hand. Spotter activation is not expected at this time.
