Wilmington, North Carolina – A developing storm system combined with an Arctic air mass is expected to bring a disruptive round of wintry weather to eastern North Carolina this weekend, with freezing rain and sleet posing the greatest threat to travel and infrastructure from Saturday night into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, precipitation is expected to begin late Saturday as colder air filters south. Much of southeastern and northeastern North Carolina could see rain transition to freezing rain or sleet overnight Saturday into early Sunday, particularly inland areas away from the immediate coast. Forecasters say confidence is high that a winter storm will impact the region, though uncertainty remains on exact precipitation types near the coast.

The most significant impacts are expected across interior counties, where ice accumulation could make roads slick and potentially impassable. Even small amounts of ice may lead to hazardous driving conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Power outages and downed tree limbs are also possible where ice builds on power lines. Along the coast, including Wilmington, rain may dominate at times, but brief periods of freezing rain cannot be ruled out if surface temperatures drop.

Travel conditions are expected to worsen Saturday night and remain hazardous through Sunday morning. As the storm exits, much colder air will move in early next week, with single-digit wind chills possible by Monday night. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases, and residents are urged to monitor updates and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
