MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Fall’s brisk winds are kicking off the week across coastal North Carolina, where gusts up to 50 mph and tidal flooding continue through Columbus Day before calmer, cooler weather settles in by Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Wind Advisory remains in effect for Carteret, Pamlico, and Craven counties until noon Sunday, while a Coastal Flood Advisory holds through 5 p.m. Monday. Forecasters warn that water could rise 1 to 2 feet above ground level near Bogue Sound and along Bogue Banks beaches, causing shallow flooding near low-lying roads and parking areas. Travel along US-70 and NC-24 could be slowed where tides meet drainage limits.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid driving through standing water, and use caution on bridges and open stretches. Tree limbs may come down, and scattered power outages are possible before winds ease Monday night.
By Tuesday, high pressure will rebuild, bringing sunnier skies and cooler, drier air for the middle of October. Morning lows dip into the 50s by midweek, offering prime conditions for outdoor events, fall leaf trips, and late-season beach walks. Pumpkin patches and park visits should benefit from mild, breezy afternoons through Thursday.
No frost or freeze concerns are expected yet, but cooler nights signal the season’s gradual shift toward late-fall chill.
