WILMINGTON, N.C. – Drivers in downtown Wilmington should prepare for rising water along Battleship Road and Water Street this afternoon as a coastal flood advisory remains in effect. Officials warn that minor flooding could leave roads impassable until 5 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, high tide along the Cape Fear River may bring up to half a foot of inundation in low-lying areas. Flooding is most likely near the USS North Carolina and stretches of Water Street. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through standing water and to allow extra time if travel is unavoidable.
Minor flooding could continue during afternoon high tides on Sunday and Monday. While water levels are expected to remain shallow, even a few inches can cause hazards for vehicles and pedestrians. Barricades may be in place to block flooded streets.
Looking ahead, Sunday brings mostly sunny skies with highs near 82 degrees, though a slight chance of showers lingers into the evening. Monday will see increased rain chances with scattered thunderstorms possible by afternoon. Tuesday may also bring storms, but conditions improve by midweek as sunshine returns and temperatures hold in the low 80s.
Residents should continue to monitor local alerts for updated advisories. Coastal flooding risks often shift quickly with tides, wind, and rainfall.
