Raleigh, NC – Central North Carolina is bracing for a wet weekend, with forecasters warning of heavy rain and possible flash flooding through Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, periods of steady rainfall associated with a non-tropical trough are expected to impact much of the state over the next several days. Central portions of North Carolina could see up to 3 inches of rainfall before the system moves out late Sunday. Localized flash flooding may occur in areas experiencing heavy downpours.

Isolated severe storms are also possible this evening, with gusty winds being the primary hazard. Drivers are advised to use caution on roadways and be alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, meteorologists are also monitoring the tropics. A tropical wave near Hispaniola could develop into a tropical depression by late Friday or Saturday as it moves toward the Bahamas. If it strengthens and shifts closer to the southeastern U.S., impacts to North Carolina would most likely occur early next week. The National Hurricane Center stressed it is still too soon to know if the system will directly affect the state.

Residents are urged to stay tuned for updated forecasts through the weekend as both rainfall and tropical developments continue to unfold.
