Morehead City, NC – Tropical activity in the Atlantic is increasing this week, with the National Weather Service (NWS) urging residents to stay alert as hurricane season remains at its peak.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, at least two tropical waves are being monitored for potential development, including Hurricane Gabrielle currently moving west across the Atlantic. Forecast models show the system may strengthen further, with additional disturbances carrying a 40–60% chance of formation over the next seven days.

The NWS office in Newport/Morehead City shared an update Monday, reminding the public that September is historically the busiest period of hurricane season. Officials urged residents across eastern North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic to double-check their hurricane preparedness kits, review evacuation routes, and monitor trusted sources for updates.

“The increase in tropical activity is a good reminder that we are still in the peak of hurricane season, and to continue to be prepared just in case,” the agency stated.

Emergency officials recommend having supplies such as water, batteries, and important documents ready. They also cautioned residents about misinformation online, encouraging people to rely on official updates from the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center.

While it is too early to know if these systems will directly impact the U.S. East Coast, forecasters stress that conditions can change quickly during this time of year.
