Wilmington, NC – Coastal North Carolina could see flooding and high winds as early as Monday evening, with impacts lasting into midweek as Potential Tropical Cyclone #9 moves closer to the region.

According to the National Weather Service Wilmington office, the system is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Imelda within the next day or two. Forecast models show conditions beginning to deteriorate Monday morning, with minor impacts escalating by the evening.

By Monday night, both flooding and wind impacts are projected to reach “moderate” levels on the NWS scale. Flooding concerns are expected to continue through Wednesday, with sustained periods of heavy rainfall increasing the risk of localized flash flooding.

Marine conditions are forecast to worsen significantly, with high impacts expected offshore beginning Monday afternoon and continuing through Wednesday. Dangerous rip currents and rough surf will also pose risks along the coast throughout the early week.

Forecasters noted that confidence is highest for hazardous marine and surf conditions, while flooding and strong winds are likely to increase in severity Monday night into Tuesday. Tornado risks remain low but could rise slightly as the system organizes.

Residents in southeastern North Carolina, particularly in Wilmington and surrounding coastal communities, are urged to monitor official updates, prepare for possible power outages, and avoid hazardous beach and marine conditions early in the week.
