Raleigh, NC –Residents across central and eastern North Carolina are being urged to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures tonight, as arctic air settles over the region and brings bitter cold conditions into early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the 10 to 15 degree range, with single-digit wind chills making it feel even colder in many areas. The coldest conditions are expected late tonight through daybreak Monday, when outdoor exposure could become dangerous.

The temperature plunge will impact communities including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and surrounding areas. Gusty winds will increase the risk of frostbite on exposed skin and raise concerns for frozen pipes and icy patches.

The National Weather Service recommends residents take precautions before going to bed, including allowing faucets to drip, opening cabinet doors beneath sinks to let warm air circulate, and setting thermostats to a consistent temperature overnight. Officials also urge residents to bring pets indoors and protect vulnerable plants from freezing conditions.

While sunshine is expected Monday, temperatures will remain well below normal, and some areas may struggle to rise above freezing during the afternoon. Wind chills will stay cold throughout the day, especially in the morning hours.

Drivers should remain alert for icy spots, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads during the morning commute.

Cold conditions are expected to ease gradually later this week, but officials stress that tonight’s freeze could be the coldest of the season so far for many parts of North Carolina.
