Wilmington, N.C. – The air already feels heavy along the North Carolina coast, and the strongest heat of the day hasn’t even arrived. Sunshine is quickly pushing temperatures upward, while humidity is setting the stage for dangerous afternoon conditions before scattered thunderstorms offer only limited relief.
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. EDT across portions of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, heat index values could reach 108 degrees, creating a heightened risk of heat-related illness for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
High temperatures are expected to reach 95 degrees this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. A 20% chance of thunderstorms develops after early afternoon, but many communities may stay dry long enough for the heat to peak. Southwest winds between 5 and 13 mph, with occasional gusts near 21 mph, will provide little relief from the oppressive humidity.
Communities including Wilmington, Leland, Burgaw, Southport, Carolina Beach and surrounding coastal areas should plan outdoor activities carefully. Construction crews, beachgoers, athletes and anyone attending outdoor events should take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short time.
Drivers along Interstate 40, U.S. 17, U.S. 74 and U.S. 421 should also remain alert. Brief thunderstorms later today could create sudden wet roads and reduced visibility despite the otherwise hot conditions. Lightning can develop quickly with summertime storms, even where rainfall remains isolated.
Storm chances increase through early next week. Sunday climbs to 96 degrees, with heat index values approaching 109 degrees before scattered afternoon thunderstorms arrive. Additional showers and thunderstorms remain possible Monday and Tuesday, continuing the familiar midsummer pattern across coastal North Carolina.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures beyond the five-day period, keeping the summer heat firmly in place.
