North Carolina – Tail lights smear red across wet pavement this morning as pockets of dense fog settle over central counties, dulling skylines and cutting visibility on familiar roads. The air feels heavy and springlike, but the commute carries real risk while fog hangs low.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning across much of the Piedmont and Sandhills. Visibility drops to one quarter mile or less in spots, especially west of the U.S. 1 corridor. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low beams, and allow extra distance, particularly near school zones and bus routes.

Fog gradually thins late this morning as sunshine breaks through. Temperatures climb quickly, pushing into the lower 70s around Raleigh, well above early January averages. For now, roads dry out and travel conditions improve through the afternoon as light winds mix the air.

Thursday stays quiet and warm with plenty of sun and highs in the mid-60s. That calm does not last long. By Friday, clouds increase and rain chances return as a developing system approaches from the west. Showers remain scattered at first but may affect evening travel.

Looking into the weekend, rain becomes more likely and steadier at times. While winter cold stays locked north, slick roads remain a concern, especially after sunset. Even in mild patterns, January moisture can surprise drivers.

Plan extra time this morning and keep headlights on in fog. Keep rain gear ready heading into the weekend. Meteorologists continue monitoring national storm systems, and additional Weather Alerts may be issued.
