Wilmington, N.C. – Coastal North Carolina could see Independence Day plans washed out as strong thunderstorms move through the Wilmington area starting late Wednesday and lasting into Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, scattered thunderstorms will develop Wednesday afternoon and intensify by evening, with an 80% chance of rain and possible severe lightning overnight. Rainfall totals may reach a quarter inch, with locally heavier amounts possible in thunderstorms.
The storm threat continues into the Fourth of July, with a 60% chance of rain during the day and more scattered storms possible after 5 p.m. Temperatures will remain high, with heat index values topping 95°F. Outdoor events across Belville, Leland, and along U.S. Route 74 may face delays or cancellations. Beachgoers and boaters are urged to monitor weather updates and avoid open water during storms.
Southwest winds of up to 15 mph could also impact fireworks displays and outdoor gatherings. Emergency officials advise residents to stay weather-aware, avoid flood-prone areas, and prepare for potential power outages.
Storm chances taper off by Friday, but lingering humidity and isolated showers remain possible. More advisories may be issued if Thursday’s storms intensify.
