Charlotte, North Carolina – Thunderstorms will roll into the Charlotte region Sunday afternoon, threatening travel and outdoor plans through Memorial Day and beyond.

According to the National Weather Service, a strong chance of showers and storms begins Sunday after 5 p.m., with lightning and heavy downpours expected. Rainfall totals remain low, but isolated thunderstorms could cause hazardous conditions on major roads including I-77, I-85, and U.S. 74. Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods and keep mobile devices charged in case of power outages.

Sunday’s high will reach 79°F with light south winds, but increasing moisture may trigger sudden, localized flooding in low-lying areas. Sunday night brings continued thunderstorm chances with temps dipping to 60°F.

Memorial Day won’t offer much relief—expect cloudy skies and a 20% chance of showers, with highs near 73°F. On Monday night, the chance of rain increases to 50%, complicating evening events or late travel.

Rain intensifies Tuesday, with a high near 69°F and thunderstorms likely after 2 p.m. The risk of showers and storms continues into Tuesday night with an 80% chance of precipitation.

Wednesday stays unsettled with a 40% chance of storms and highs in the low 70s. Expect similar conditions Thursday with a chance of storms and a high of 79°F.

Summer weather will try to make a comeback Friday with partly sunny skies and a high near 82°F. Storms may linger, but a drier trend is possible heading into next weekend.
