Morehead City, North Carolina – Scattered thunderstorms could drench eastern North Carolina by Thursday afternoon, with the highest chances of rain and flash flooding south of Highway 264.
According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a frontal boundary approaching from the northwest will trigger widespread showers and storms beginning Thursday morning, with rain chances peaking between 50% and 60% across areas like Jacksonville (58%), Kenansville (59%), and Wallace (60%). The strongest storms may produce frequent lightning, strong wind gusts, and pockets of heavy rainfall, especially in the coastal plain and Inner Banks.
Cities including New Bern (55%), Morehead City (51%), and Greenville (54%) are all in line for significant rainfall. Areas south and east of Hwy 264 are most vulnerable to isolated flash flooding as saturated soils struggle to absorb rapid downpours. Commuters along Hwy 17 and coastal roads should be prepared for possible ponding and delays during peak afternoon hours.
Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded roads, secure outdoor furniture, and keep mobile devices charged in case of power outages. This unsettled pattern is expected to linger into the weekend, with additional rounds of storms likely Friday through Sunday.
⚠️ Rain and thunderstorm chances continue through the weekend — updates expected daily.
