North Carolina Weather Alert: Thunderstorm Risk for U.S. Route 70 Corridor Near Newport Tuesday Night into Wednesday

Newport, North Carolina – Hot, humid air and a rising storm threat could make for a turbulent midweek stretch across eastern North Carolina. Daytime highs will climb to 87°F on Wednesday, just as thunderstorms begin to push through the region, bringing wind gusts and the chance of heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, scattered thunderstorms may develop late Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday evening. Areas along U.S. Route 70 and Route 17 could see brief downpours and slick road conditions, especially between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday. Some storms could contain gusts between 10 and 15 mph.

Tuesday will remain mostly sunny and warm, with a high near 82°F and steady northeast winds between 7 to 9 mph. Rain chances increase after midnight as a low-pressure system moves inland, triggering isolated showers and storms.

By Wednesday morning, rain becomes more widespread. Thunderstorm chances hover near 50% with rainfall totals under a tenth of an inch—unless storms become locally stronger.
