North Carolina – Gray skies hang low this morning as steady rain darkens pavement and car hoods across central parts of the state. The air feels damp and cool, and jackets stay zipped as conditions remain unsettled to start the day.

According to the National Weather Service, rain spreads through the Raleigh area mainly through the afternoon, with precipitation chances near 60 percent. Temperatures struggle to rise, topping out near 41 degrees. Wet roads and reduced visibility could slow travel along I-40, I-440, and U.S. 1. Allow extra time and watch for pooling water in low spots.

As the rain tapers later, colder air slides in. Skies gradually clear, and temperatures drop toward the freezing mark. Lows settle near 31 degrees, creating a frost risk by early Sunday. Any lingering moisture on bridges or shaded roads could briefly turn slick. Use caution if heading out early.

Sunshine returns Sunday, and the turnaround begins fast. Highs climb into the low 50s, offering a noticeable break from the chill. Monday stays mild with highs in the low 50s again, then warmer air surges in. By Tuesday, temperatures reach the mid-60s, with upper 60s possible by Wednesday.

Meteorologists are watching the sharp temperature swing closely. Cool mornings followed by warmer afternoons can still cause isolated slick spots where frost melts and refreezes overnight. For now, winter jackets remain useful early, while lighter layers work later in the day.

Weather Alerts may be adjusted as conditions change into the first full week of 2026. Heading out today or noticing frost early Sunday? Share what you’re seeing around Raleigh.
