Wilmington, NC – A blanket of dense fog has settled across southeastern North Carolina this morning, softening headlights and slowing travel along major coastal routes. Visibility has dropped below a mile in several areas, especially near Wilmington, Leland, and Carolina Beach, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 8 a.m.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington warns that the fog may make driving hazardous before sunrise. Drivers along U.S. 17, U.S. 74, and I-140 are urged to use low beams, slow down, and allow extra braking distance through the early commute.
By mid-morning, the fog will lift as mild air pushes in from the southwest. Sunshine returns through the afternoon with highs near 66°F and a light breeze from the west. The air will feel warm and dry compared to earlier in the week — a pleasant break for those planning outdoor errands or early fall yard cleanup.
Friday continues the trend, with clear skies and temperatures climbing to the upper 60s before cooling into the 40s by evening. The weekend looks ideal for coastal activities or local events, with highs near 64°F on Saturday and 68°F Sunday under full sunshine.
Looking ahead, forecasters expect this stretch of dry, calm weather to hold into early next week. While the Southeast enjoys mild conditions, colder air across the northern U.S. continues to hint at early snow chances for mid-November — a possible sign of stronger fronts arriving later this month. For now, Wilmington residents can look forward to bright skies and calm seas after this morning’s fog fades.
