North Carolina — Warm sunshine masks what’s coming as a sharp winter pattern lines up just offshore.

Conditions feel mild across Wilmington early today, with temperatures climbing into the low 60s. That warmth fades fast. Meteorologists are now tracking an Extreme Cold Watch for southeastern North Carolina, including Wilmington and coastal Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties. The watch begins Sunday evening and lasts through Monday morning.

Rain showers arrive Sunday afternoon as a strong cold front sweeps through. Winds turn north behind the front and strengthen quickly. By evening, temperatures drop into the upper teens, while brisk winds drive wind chills near 8 degrees above zero. For coastal North Carolina, that’s a significant early-season cold snap.

Travel conditions may change rapidly after sunset. Wet pavement from earlier rain can freeze as temperatures fall, creating black ice on bridges, ramps, and shaded roads. Drivers on U.S. 17, College Road, and River Road should plan extra time and reduce speed late Sunday.

By Monday morning, the cold peaks. Lows hover near 17 degrees, with wind chills remaining in the single digits. Frostbite and hypothermia become concerns for anyone outdoors without protection. Pipes, pets, and exposed plants are also at risk. Residents should wrap pipes, drip faucets, and bring pets inside before nightfall.

Monday stays sunny but cold, with highs only reaching around 40 degrees. Winds ease during the afternoon, allowing gradual improvement. A second cold night follows, though not as severe.

Looking ahead, temperatures rebound steadily. Tuesday climbs into the low 50s, and midweek warmth returns, with highs near 60 degrees by Wednesday. Still, this event signals winter’s arrival along the Carolina coast.
