Wilmington, North Carolina – North Carolina’s stretch of sunny calm will break Sunday night as summer storms move into the Wilmington area, marking a shift toward more unsettled weather heading into June.

According to the National Weather Service, a 40% chance of thunderstorms develops Sunday night after sunset, with a second round possible Monday morning. Gusty winds and isolated heavy downpours may accompany the system, although rainfall totals are expected to remain under a tenth of an inch in most areas.

On Sunday, conditions will be warm and calm during the day, with highs near 83°F and light southern winds. But by nightfall, clouds will build, and the thunderstorm threat will increase, especially near U.S. Highway 17 and areas inland like Leland and Belville. Monday will bring a slight cooldown, with highs near 84°F and winds shifting from the north at 3 to 5 mph.

Drivers should remain alert for slick roads and brief low visibility Monday morning. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of active weather.

Looking ahead, summer heat returns quickly. Highs will climb each day through the week, reaching 85°F on Wednesday and pushing 88°F by Friday. No additional rain is expected after Monday, and skies will remain mostly clear through midweek.

Wildfire smoke from Canada may cause light haze across coastal areas through Tuesday but is not expected to impact air quality significantly.
