Charlotte, NC – A powerful storm system is bringing high winds and severe thunderstorms to North Carolina, with impacts expected through Monday. Residents in Charlotte and surrounding areas should prepare for gusts up to 50 mph and heavy rain, potentially disrupting travel and outdoor plans for St. Patrick’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service, a wind advisory remains in effect until 2 p.m. Monday, affecting much of the Piedmont and foothills, including Charlotte, Greensboro, and Asheville. South winds between 15-25 mph will persist, with stronger gusts up to 50 mph. These conditions could down trees, cause power outages, and make travel hazardous, especially on I-77 and I-85.

Sunday night will see showers and possible thunderstorms, some of which could be severe. The greatest storm threat occurs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday, with heavy rainfall expected. Flash flooding is possible in low-lying areas. Drivers should allow extra time for commutes and secure outdoor furniture and decorations.

Looking ahead, spring officially begins Thursday, March 20, and the weather is expected to improve. After Monday’s storms, Tuesday will be sunny with a high of 72°F, followed by mostly clear skies through midweek. Highs will rise into the mid-70s by Wednesday, offering a warm start to the season.
