Wilmington, NC – A strong thunderstorm is moving through western New Hanover and southeastern Brunswick counties, bringing gusty winds and small hail to the area until 8 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the storm was detected near Mill Creek, approximately nine miles north of Oak Island, traveling northeast at 15 mph. Radar indicates wind gusts up to 40 mph and hail up to half an inch in diameter.
Officials warn that these winds may knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects, while minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Heavy rainfall accompanying the storm could also lead to localized flooding. Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to seek shelter if outdoors.
Areas affected include Wilmington, Southport, Bolivia, Belville, Navassa, Winnabow, Caswell Beach, and Fort Fisher. Notable landmarks such as Wilmington International Airport, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Cape Fear Hospital, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington are also in the storm’s path.
Motorists on Interstate 140 should be cautious, particularly between mile markers 15 and 16, where severe weather conditions could impact travel.
