MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The sound of the surf is louder this morning, waves pounding the shoreline under a thick gray sky. Winds whip through the dunes and rattle loose signs along U.S. 70 as eastern North Carolina wakes to a blustery Tuesday under a Wind Advisory.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, northeast winds will reach 20 to 30 mph today, with gusts topping 50 mph along the coast and the Outer Banks. The advisory remains in effect through 5 p.m. Tuesday for mainland Dare, Hyde, Craven, Tyrrell, and West Carteret counties. Power flickers are possible, and driving may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles crossing the Atlantic Beach Bridge or heading east on Route 70.

Showers will continue through Tuesday afternoon before tapering tonight. Minor tree damage and scattered outages could occur, particularly near open stretches of Highway 24 and waterfront neighborhoods from Newport to Beaufort. Mariners should remain in port — rough surf and a Moderate Rip Current Risk continue through this evening.

By Wednesday, winds ease and rain chances drop, leading to calmer, clearer conditions by Thursday. Sunshine and low humidity return Friday, setting up ideal weather for Halloween festivities across Carteret County and Emerald Isle.

Temperatures will climb back into the mid-60s by Friday afternoon, with crisp mornings and starry evenings ahead.

After a stormy start, coastal North Carolina looks to finish the week calm, bright, and seasonably mild — with that telltale November breeze waiting offshore.
