Raleigh, NC – A line of severe storms is set to sweep through central North Carolina today, bringing high winds, heavy rain, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that these storms could create hazardous travel conditions along major routes like I-40, especially during peak afternoon and evening hours.

According to the NWS, the most intense weather is expected between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph. These winds, combined with localized flooding risks, could cause significant disruptions. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roads, and monitor updates.

Overnight, skies will clear slightly, leaving cooler temperatures near 49°F. Monday will offer a brief reprieve with sunny skies and a high of 62°F, but by Tuesday, rain chances return with the potential for scattered showers. Looking ahead to New Year’s Day, forecasters predict sunny conditions and a high of 55°F, ideal for holiday plans.

Despite the break in severe weather after today, officials stress the importance of staying vigilant. Any additional rainfall could exacerbate existing flood-prone areas. Spotter activation may be needed if conditions intensify.

This five-day forecast provides central North Carolina residents with a glimpse of what’s to come:

• Monday: Sunny, high near 62°F, low near 43°F.

• Tuesday: Chance of rain after 1 p.m., high near 64°F.

• Wednesday (New Year’s Day): Sunny, high near 55°F.

• Thursday: Clear and cool, high near 48°F.

Be prepared today and plan ahead for the week.
