Asheville, NC – A strong cold front moving through western North Carolina will bring snow, gusty winds, and increased fire danger today through early Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, moisture from the northwest will generate snowfall this afternoon and tonight across the mountains. Snowfall totals of 1-3 inches are expected above 3,500 feet, while higher elevations in the Smoky Mountains could see 4-6 inches or more. Lighter snow or flurries may reach northern Jackson, southern Haywood, and southern Buncombe counties, though no accumulation is expected. Snow should taper off before dawn Friday.
In addition to snowfall, strong northwest winds will develop, increasing to 45-50 mph late tonight. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the North Carolina mountains from 8 p.m. Thursday through 8 a.m. Friday. Residents should prepare for potential power outages and difficult travel conditions.
Meanwhile, parts of the North Carolina Foothills and Piedmont face increased fire danger due to dry conditions and gusty winds. A Fire Danger Statement has been issued from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday as relative humidity drops below 30%. Officials advise residents to check burn permits and exercise caution with outdoor fires.
Drivers should plan for slippery roads in the mountains and strong winds statewide. Those in affected areas should stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions.
