Wilkesboro, North Carolina – Drivers across north central and northwest North Carolina could face slick and icy roads tonight as lingering snow and cold temperatures create hazardous travel conditions heading into the Monday morning commute. Snow that fell earlier this weekend has not fully melted, and refreezing is expected after sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Monday for portions of north central and northwest North Carolina. Affected counties include Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Wilkes, and Yadkin.

Roads in and around Wilkesboro, Mount Airy, Dobson, Danbury, Eden, Yadkinville, and Yanceyville may remain snow-covered or develop patches of ice overnight. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads are expected to be especially slick as temperatures fall below freezing, allowing any remaining moisture to turn to ice.

Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time Monday morning. Even roads that appear clear could hide black ice in shaded or elevated areas. The advisory is expected to expire by mid-morning Monday as temperatures rise, but lingering slick spots could persist in rural or higher-elevation areas. Motorists are encouraged to check local road conditions before heading out and be prepared for delays early Monday.
