Greenville, N.C. – Isolated severe thunderstorms could slam into eastern North Carolina this afternoon and evening, with the greatest risk targeting areas north of U.S. Route 70.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, strong storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds up to 65 mph are expected to develop by late Thursday, May 15. Heavier downpours may also accompany the storms, especially across counties including Pitt, Wilson, Lenoir, and Edgecombe.

Cities like Greenville, Kinston, and Washington fall under a marginal to slight risk zone, with impacts expected to be strongest during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Motorists should be cautious on roads like US 258 and NC 11, where sudden gusts and pooling water could create hazardous driving conditions.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay indoors during lightning, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings—especially in areas with limited cell coverage.

The severe weather threat is expected to taper off overnight, but additional alerts may be issued if storm activity intensifies or shifts south.
