Raleigh, N.C. – Damaging winds and intense lightning are sweeping across eastern and north-central North Carolina this evening as a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday, threatening power outages and hazardous travel.

According to the National Weather Service Raleigh, areas from Siler City to Kill Devil Hills, including Raleigh, Tarboro, Henderson, and Greenville, could see isolated hail up to quarter size, frequent lightning, and wind gusts reaching 65 mph. Over 2.5 million people, including 577 schools and 40 hospitals, are within the watch zone.

Drivers along Interstate 95 and U.S. 64 should prepare for sudden downpours and limited visibility. Local emergency management agencies urge residents to avoid outdoor activities, secure loose items, and stay off the roads if possible. Power companies are also bracing for scattered outages, especially in rural and coastal counties.

The storms mark one of the first widespread severe weather events of June for North Carolina, following a relatively quiet spring season. Areas like Plymouth, Kill Devil Hills, and Elizabeth City could see storm activity continue into the night.

The storm threat is expected to diminish after 11 p.m., but additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist or worsen.
