Raleigh, N.C. – Strong to severe storms could move across north-central North Carolina Saturday afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts over 60 mph between 2 and 8 p.m. The National Weather Service warns the greatest threat stretches from Greensboro to Roanoke Rapids, with widespread scattered storms possible across the Triangle.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, storms will develop during the afternoon and peak into the evening hours. The primary hazard will be strong straight-line winds, capable of downing trees and power lines. Localized outages and hazardous travel conditions are possible, especially along Interstates 85 and 40.
Communities including Durham, Chapel Hill, Henderson, and Rocky Mount are highlighted for the highest risk. Emergency officials urge residents to stay alert, secure outdoor items, and keep multiple ways to receive warnings in case severe thunderstorm alerts are issued.
Travelers should consider delaying outdoor activities during the late afternoon. Residents are advised to charge devices in advance and be prepared for possible service disruptions.
The storm threat will diminish after sunset, but unsettled weather could continue into early next week. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions evolve.
