Raleigh, NC – North Carolina residents are urged to prepare for a dual threat of fire danger and severe thunderstorms on Monday, March 31, with conditions expected to worsen through the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Level 2 (Slight) Risk for severe weather has been issued across central portions of the state, including Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville. Storms may bring damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes between 2 p.m. and midnight Monday.

The threat coincides with an increased fire danger along and west of Highway US 1, affecting the Western Piedmont and Sandhills regions. Gusty southwest winds of up to 25 mph and dry conditions elevate the wildfire risk, with statewide burn bans remaining in effect until further notice.

Residents in affected areas should have multiple methods for receiving weather alerts, including NOAA radios and mobile apps. Outdoor burning should be avoided. Travel disruptions, power outages, and hazardous road conditions are possible due to storm activity and strong winds.

This weather event comes as North Carolina transitions into its spring storm season, often marked by volatile conditions. Local emergency management advises staying updated as forecasts evolve through the weekend.
