Morehead City, N.C. – Eastern North Carolina faces a dangerous combination of searing heat and severe storms Wednesday, with damaging winds and hail possible between 2 and 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, strong to severe thunderstorms could develop across the region late Wednesday afternoon into the evening. These storms may bring wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail approaching half-dollar size, heavy rainfall, and a low-end tornado threat.
Communities including Greenville, Jacksonville, New Bern, and the Outer Banks fall within the enhanced risk zone. Earlier storms from Tuesday night may linger into Wednesday morning, adding to flooding concerns.
Meanwhile, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Heat indices will soar above 105°F for most inland locations, with values nearing 110°F in places like Kinston, Washington, and Morehead City. The dangerous heat increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Officials recommend postponing strenuous activities until after sunset if possible.
More updates may be issued if storm strength or coverage increases.
