Raleigh, North Carolina – North Carolina faces a volatile weather day Friday as powerful thunderstorms, damaging winds, and a tornado risk target the I-40 corridor and Piedmont counties. Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding areas should brace for severe weather beginning mid-morning Friday and lasting through the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, thunderstorms are expected to intensify between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and isolated large hail possible. Spotters may be activated, and the risk of a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. Localized flooding is also a concern in low-lying and urban areas.

Drivers should avoid travel on I-40, US-1, and NC-147 during peak storm activity. Secure outdoor items and charge devices ahead of potential power outages.

Friday night will bring scattered showers before skies begin to clear. Saturday marks a shift toward calmer weather with highs near 80°F and only a slight chance of rain after 2 p.m. Sunday will be sunny with highs in the low 80s, setting the stage for summer-like temperatures.

Looking ahead, summer heat begins to settle in by Monday. Highs are expected to reach the upper 80s Monday and Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies. By Wednesday, Raleigh could see temperatures pushing 90°F—marking a hot start to June.

More alerts may be issued Friday morning. Stay weather aware and monitor updates from the National Weather Service.
