Newport, North Carolina – A rip current warning is in effect along North Carolina’s southern Outer Banks beaches until 8 p.m. Monday, threatening swimmers from Cape Lookout to Emerald Isle. On land, a second hazard looms: a round of potentially strong thunderstorms could hit Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a moderate rip current risk remains active throughout Monday along beaches in Carteret and Onslow counties. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the surf, especially south of Cape Lookout, as dangerous currents can pull even experienced swimmers offshore.

Inland, the bigger concern is building instability that could spark strong to severe storms starting late Tuesday night. Gusty winds and heavy rain are possible across communities from Newport to Havelock. Some thunderstorms may produce higher rainfall amounts, especially near US-70 and coastal roadways.

Here’s what to expect this week:

  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high of 81°F. Winds east at 8 mph.
  • Tuesday Night: 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mostly after 2 a.m.
  • Wednesday: Showers and storms continue until afternoon. High of 87°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high of 82°F. Calmer conditions expected.
  • Friday into the weekend: Mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s. Pleasant [Summer] pattern.

If you’re heading to the coast, avoid swimming in unguarded areas and monitor beach flags. Thunderstorms could shift eastward fast Tuesday night — keep devices charged and stay weather-aware.

More updates may follow if conditions worsen.
