North Carolina – Headlights reflect off damp pavement this morning as cold air tightens across central North Carolina. Patches of ice linger in shaded spots, and winter hazards are far from finished as another round of unsettled weather lines up midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, icy spots and refrozen slush remain a concern early today after temperatures dipped well below freezing. A Hazardous Weather Outlook and Special Weather Statement remain in effect, citing black ice risks and hazardous travel across much of central North Carolina.

Conditions improve briefly this afternoon as sunshine pushes highs into the mid-40s. That thaw may feel welcome, but it sets up another problem. Melted snow and water will refreeze quickly once temperatures drop again after sunset. Drivers should use caution on bridges, ramps, and secondary roads.

By Wednesday, a frontal system moves in from the west. Rain develops during the day, then transitions to a rain-and-snow mix Wednesday night as colder air returns. Light snow accumulation remains possible, generally under a half inch, but timing during late evening travel could increase impact across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and surrounding communities.

I-40, I-440, and I-540 may see reduced traction as temperatures fall into the upper 20s Wednesday night. Even small amounts of snow can turn wet pavement slick fast. Plan extra time and slow down.

Thursday brings drier weather but colder air, with highs near 38 and a crisp wind. By Friday, sunshine returns and temperatures rebound into the upper 40s, offering a break before another chilly weekend night.

Looking ahead, 6–10 day outlooks suggest a warming trend late next week, hinting at early signs of spring. Until then, winter hazards remain. Seeing icy spots where you live? Let us know what conditions look like in your neighborhood.
