Warm coastal air is already building across southeastern North Carolina this morning as sunshine brightens beaches and neighborhoods around Wilmington. Early commuters along U.S. 17, I-40, and Market Street are starting the day under calm skies, but changes are already developing offshore.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, temperatures will climb quickly today with highs reaching 83°F, far above typical early-March readings. Light southwest winds strengthen through the afternoon, with occasional gusts nearing 20 mph along the Cape Fear coast.

The warmth is temporary. Meteorologists are tracking a developing weather system expected to sweep into coastal North Carolina Thursday.

Showers and thunderstorms may begin late morning before steadier rain spreads through the afternoon. Rain chances climb near 90 percent, and winds could gust to 25 mph as the front approaches the coast.

Drivers across New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties should prepare for wet pavement and slower travel along I-40, U.S. 17, and U.S. 74/76 during peak traffic periods. Heavy bursts of rain could briefly reduce visibility.

Temperatures fall sharply once the front moves through. By Thursday night, readings drop toward 37°F, bringing a crisp late-winter feel to the Cape Fear region.

Sunshine quickly returns Friday with highs near 66°F, offering a pleasant break as spring break travel begins increasing across the Carolina coast. Beaches and coastal communities should see calmer conditions heading into the weekend.

Saturday looks bright and mild with highs around 73°F, ideal for outdoor plans from Wrightsville Beach to Carolina Beach. Another disturbance may bring scattered showers by Sunday afternoon.

With spring officially arriving March 20, longer stretches of warm weather may return across the Southeast next week.
