Newport drivers and coastal residents could see slick spots and slower commutes Tuesday as showers and gusty winds sweep into eastern North Carolina. The National Weather Service warns that wind gusts near 26 mph and light rain could impact travel, especially along Highway 70. Extra caution is urged for those driving near open stretches of road or bridges, where winds may feel stronger.

According to the National Weather Service office in Morehead City, skies will remain mostly cloudy overnight into Tuesday morning, with a high near 79 degrees. Showers may develop after 2 p.m., with rain chances hovering around 30 percent. While rainfall amounts are expected to be light, winds from the northeast could make conditions feel unsettled, particularly for boaters and those traveling inland.

Residents in Newport, Havelock, and surrounding Carteret County should secure outdoor items and monitor changing conditions. Mariners should avoid unnecessary trips as gusts may challenge smaller vessels near Bogue Sound and Core Creek.

Wednesday brings another chance of isolated showers before skies gradually clear, offering a drier stretch for midweek. By Thursday, more sunshine returns with highs climbing into the lower 80s. Cooler mornings and mostly sunny afternoons will dominate through the weekend, making conditions more favorable for outdoor plans.

Alerts remain in effect for gusty winds and scattered rain through Tuesday night, with additional updates possible if storm chances increase.
