NEWPORT, N.C. – North Carolina’s coast will enjoy clear skies and warm sunshine through Friday, but residents should prepare for a stormy turn by the weekend. Drivers on U.S. 70 could face delays as showers and thunderstorms roll in Sunday afternoon and linger into Monday.

According to the National Weather Service office in Morehead City, Thursday will stay calm with highs near 83, followed by sunny skies Friday topping out around 87. North winds remain light, but humid air builds back in late Saturday. By Sunday, instability brings a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., threatening outdoor plans and beach traffic.

Communities from Morehead City to Havelock should use the dry stretch to prepare. Outdoor events, including early fall sports, are best scheduled before Saturday evening. The risk of lightning and heavy downpours could force cancellations late Sunday, especially for evening football practices and boating along the Crystal Coast.

Travelers should monitor local updates and avoid unnecessary driving during heavier cells. Keep devices charged and secure outdoor furniture before the storms arrive. Roads prone to flooding, including stretches near the Newport River, could see ponding during heavier bursts of rain.

While Thursday and Friday promise prime beach weather, conditions change quickly this time of year. With fall storm patterns setting in, residents should remain alert for updated advisories into early next week.
