North Carolina – Dry leaves skitter across sidewalks and flags snap sharply this morning as fire danger escalates across central parts of the state. Gusty winds and very low humidity are combining fast, creating hazardous conditions during a busy holiday travel week.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from midday through early evening today across the Piedmont, including Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding counties. West winds increase to 20 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity drops as low as 20 percent during peak heating.

In the Triangle, patchy fog and damp roads early give way to rapid drying by late morning. Temperatures climb into the mid-60s before falling sharply late today as colder air arrives. Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, even briefly. Any spark could spread quickly under these conditions.

Travelers on I-40, I-85, and U.S. 1 may notice sudden crosswinds this afternoon, especially in open areas. Lightweight vehicles and drivers towing trailers should stay alert. Secure loose holiday decorations and trash bins before winds strengthen.

By tonight, skies clear and winds ease, but temperatures tumble. Lows dip into the upper 20s by Tuesday morning, a reminder that winter is tightening its grip. The colder pattern holds through midweek, with crisp days and chilly nights leading into New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Day 2026 looks quiet and dry, with sunshine and highs in the low 50s, favorable for outdoor plans but still cool after sunset. Fire danger may linger later this week due to continued dry air, even as winds relax.
