According to the NWS, the moderate rip current risk will continue through the evening, with conditions becoming more hazardous by Sunday afternoon as winds increase. Those hoping to take a dip or enjoy the coastline should avoid the water, as these rip currents can quickly pull swimmers out to sea, even in shallow waters.

This advisory is in effect for several coastal counties, including West Carteret, East Carteret, and Coastal Onslow, covering areas like Morehead City, Emerald Isle, and the Outer Banks. These regions are particularly vulnerable to strong rip currents due to the prevailing south winds and rough seas.

What to Expect:
With winds gusting up to 24 mph, combined with ocean swells, conditions could worsen by Sunday night. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, and if already in the water, exit immediately at the first sign of trouble. If you’re planning to be on or near the beach, remember that conditions can change rapidly, especially when winds pick up.

Looking Ahead:
The weather throughout the upcoming week in eastern North Carolina will be relatively mild, with temperatures in the mid-70s during the day and cooling down to the mid-60s at night. There’s a chance of showers on Monday, but Tuesday will bring sunny skies with highs around 81°F. As we move into the second half of the week, temperatures will stay comfortable, but more chances of rain will return, especially on Thursday.

Keep an eye on local weather updates, as conditions could change with little warning. For now, the rip current risk remains the most immediate hazard, so stay safe and plan your beach visits accordingly.
