Newport, NC – A high risk of dangerous rip currents is impacting beaches across North Carolina today, as lifeguards and beachgoers are urged to exercise caution. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning for multiple coastal towns, including Nags Head, Duck, and Hatteras Village, where the surf zone presents life-threatening conditions. Rip currents remain moderate along other beaches, including Rodanthe and Avon, though caution is still advised.
According to the NWS, today’s weather is expected to be calm overall, with gusty winds of up to 25 knots coming out of the northeast, posing challenges for mariners. Temperatures will range between 60°F to 65°F inland and 55°F to 60°F at the beaches.
Looking ahead, conditions will remain dry through Thursday, with temperatures hitting the low 70s in some inland areas. However, by Friday, a cold front will bring widespread rain and the potential for strong thunderstorms, adding to the weather complexities across the state.
Beachgoers are encouraged to remain aware of the high rip current risk and to check local advisories before heading to the coast.
